For pet owners, the ability to identify or assess a potential illness or injury is a challenging obstacle. As the first step to become a member of our pet's health care team, students learn to perform a basic assessment on a dog and a cat, apply basic first aid to a wounded pet, and to restrain and transport an injured pet with safety in mind for both the handler and the pet. Also included are discussions regarding common ailments seen in emergency veterinary medicine such as heat stroke, chocolate toxicity, porcupine run-ins, seizures, diabetic shock, wound care, vaccine reactions, diarrhea, constipation, urinary blockages, how to pill cats and dogs, bloat, cut pads, bandaging and splint techniques, and much more. |
